In the framework of the call for interest specifically dedicated to marine protected areas of strong protection in the Mediterranean, financed by the MAVA Foundation, the MedFund Board of Directors has approved financial support from January 1, 2023 for two new marine protected areas for a period of 5 years: Datça Bozburun in Turkey and the Telascica Natural Park in Croatia.

This support of a total amount of 600,000 euros is granted to local civil society organizations that work alongside national agencies in charge of protected areas. It contributes to the financing of activities essential to the management of strong protected areas in order to preserve marine ecosystems and the populations that depend on them.

TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IT:

  • Datça bozburun, on the southern coast of Turkey, is the MPA with the largest strongly protected area in the Mediterranean (27 km2). With rich biodiversity and archaeological value, it is considered one of the most important protected areas in Turkey (1,474 km2 of protected area). The Turkish Mediterranean Conservation Society is working in support of the Turkish Ministry of Environment to ensure the preservation of resources and the effective management of the marine protected area in the long term.
  • Telascica Nature Park is located in the central part of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, in Croatia. Surrounded by 13 islands and islets, as well as 6 islets inside the bay, the protected area of 70 km2, of which 1.65 km2 is in a strong protection zone, has been proclaimed a nature park because of the value of its flora and fauna, geological and geomorphological phenomena, diversity of seabed life and interesting archaeological heritage.
