🔹 According to MedPAN and SPA/RAC most updated data on Mediterranean MPA status, only 8.8% of the Mediterranean Sea is covered by officially designated MPAs, 23% of these MPAs are implementing their management plan, only 13% have a suitable budget and 83% are lacking MPA staff.
🔹 A coordinated regional approach is vital to boost management effectiveness across MPAs and SPAMIs.
🔹 Standards and tools like the IUCN Green List, IMET, and The MedFund’s management effectiveness tracking tool, are driving collective progress in measuring the efficiency of the existing MPAs and their compliance to regional standards.
