The MedFund and the Public enterprise for coastal zone management of Montenegro, the National agency responsible for the management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Montenegro, started their collaboration on May 2023 to support the management of the first designated MPAs in the country: Nature parks Platamuni and Katic. This partnership represents a significant achievement in marine conservation for Montenegro and the Mediterranean.
Covering respectively 10km² and 27km², Platamuni and Katic MPAs encompass diverse marine habitats, including coralligenous, seagrass meadows, and important breeding grounds for various marine species. The collaboration between the MedFund and the Public enterprise for coastal zone management aims to ensure effective management, promote local governance of those areas, enhance awareness and surveillance, monitor ecological benefits and support sustainable use of these precious marine ecosystems.
For a 5 years period, The MedFund will provide a financial support of USD 286.200 for each MPA, a financial assistance, technical expertise and capacity building to enable the implementation of management plans and enhance the long-term sustainability of the MPAs. This partnership is part of a regional project entitled “Build back a blue and stronger Mediterranean,” funded by the Global Environment Facility (The GEF) and supported by Conservation International, to improve marine and coastal conservation in the Mediterranean.
