Nice, France – June 10, 2025
On the occasion of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) taking place in Nice, The MedFund is organizing a high-level side event entitled:
“The MedFund: An Innovative Financial Mechanism Serving the Global Biodiversity Framework – Lessons from the Mediterranean for the Global Ocean.”
Scheduled from 5:30 to 6:45 PM in Room 3 of the Blue Zone, the event will highlight a decade of impact in sustainable financing for marine conservation.
A Decade of actions and cooperation
The first panel will trace the origins of The MedFund, with the participation of high-level representatives from the three founding countries: Monaco, France, and Tunisia. A key moment in this session will be the official signing of a new funding agreement between the Principality of Monaco and The MedFund.
Concrete impact at the Mediterranean scale
The second panel will offer a regional perspective on The MedFund’s tangible results. This session will feature voices from MPA managers and civil society representatives from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lebanon, Türkiye, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia, showcasing real achievements in climate adaptation, scientific monitoring, co-management, surveillance, local governance, gender inclusion, and more.
Scaling up towards 2030
Looking ahead, the third panel will present The MedFund’s 2025–2030 strategy, built around three priorities:
• Consolidate support to existing MPAs to ensure their long-term effectiveness;
• Expand action to 20 new MPAs, including highly protected ones;
• Mobilize new funding to support 40 MPAs by 2030.
This session will give the floor to The MedFund’s technical and financial partners, such as the Global Environment Facility, Fonds français pour l’environnement Mondial, Agence française de développement and private foundations.
Join us on 10 June to celebrate this journey, share lessons learned, and help build a more sustainable future for marine conservation — from the Mediterranean to the global ocean.
